Corporate buildings and their associated parking lots account for a substantial amount of impervious area, making them ideal areas for implementing low impact development (LID). Using LID practices to capture and treat stormwater from these areas can increase infiltration, decrease runoff, and reduce the stress on local stormwater infrastructure. As the City of Mississauga has recently introduced a stormwater charge and an associated credit program, there is an additional financial incentive to install LID features in these areas.
Credit Valley Conservation’s (CVC’s) Head Office provides an example of the types of LID practices that can be installed in a typical commercial location. The property includes two permeable parking lots and a rainwater harvesting system. One of the permeable lots and the rainwater harvesting system are included as part of CVC’s LID monitoring program, which is assessing the long-term water quantity and quality performance of these types of systems.
This webinar will give an overview of the performance of these stormwater treatment features. The permeable lot reduces stormwater volumes and reduces the load of a number of pollutants. Key drivers for volume control performance will be discussed including rainfall total volumes and intensity.
Infiltration testing of both permeable lots indicates that there are differences in the level of performance both between the two lots and within each lot.
The rainwater harvesting system has allowed CVC to reduce its stormwater impact and municipal water usage. The monitoring results demonstrate how the weather and the addition of water from a sump pump influence the usage of the system.
The results from this monitoring program have been used to inform CVC’s application for the stormwater change in the City of Mississauga, and will help guide planned retrofits to the LID features at this site in order to maximize the stormwater credit benefit.
