St. Lawrence River Institute: Science & Nature on Tap

February 3, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Researching the Genetics behind Devastating Disease –
“The Science of Finding a Cure” at next Science & Nature on Tap

Cornwall, ON – On Wednesday, February 3rd at 7 pm Science and Nature on Tap at Schnitzel’s will explore the cutting edge of medical research in Canada by highlighting the work of a local medical research scientist. Dr. Pearl Campbell is a scientist has spent a career working to combat devastating diseases through scientific investigation. She is using the key of the human genome to unlock the mystery surrounding some of our most challenging diseases. A resident of South Glengarry, Dr. Campbell is Director of Stem Core Laboratories with the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. Her research revolves around the concept that stem cell dysfunction lies at the very heart of today’s most devastating illnesses such as cancer, type I diabetes, cardiac disease, Parkinson’s, Muscular Dystrophy, and Alzheimer’s.

Graduating from the John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland with a MS in Biotechnology, Dr. Campbell worked at the renowned John Hopkins School of Medicine serving as a Senior Research Technician. A move north of the border in 1996 led her to Directorship of the Regional Genomics Centre in London, Ontario. She earned her Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Medicine from the Ottawa University and for the last 13 years she has served as Director of Stem Core Laboratories at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.

Dr. Campbell says, “The use of stem cells for basic discovery and in regenerative therapy presents an opportunity to transform how medicine is practiced and for pharmaceutical intervention.” She looks forward to discussing how this modern revolution in genetics is being used to advance research into disease and the personalization of medicine.
